Martin Sung is a model student. He is involved. He is smart. He is professional. The Florida IT Career Alliance has been fortunate enough to have him on as a part of the team for the past year. In April 2016, Martin will graduate from Florida State University with a Bachelor’s in Information Technology. Outside of his academic work, Martin has been highly involved on campus. He is the current President of the Association of IT Professionals, founding member of Codeducation, and Secretary of Transfers Helping Transfers. He is also a member of STARS and FSU Asian American Alumni. Because of his love for mentoring and educating students about the opportunities available in the technology field, Martin joined FITC in the spring of 2015. He described how he “felt the need to do something that would positively impact others and help change the world.” FITC was the best way to accomplish his goal.

IMG_9715Martin is an ideal ambassador. He has been involved with a multitude of events ranging from hosting workshops to help students get jobs, to presenting to high school students about a variety of technology related topics. He is confident, personable, and knowledgeable. Martin most enjoyed teaching the Google CS Program to local middle school students. In the fall of 2015, FITC partnered with the Tallahassee Mayor’s Office and Leon County Schools to teach basic coding classes for students at Cobb and Nims Middle School . Martin was a lead instructor for one of the classes. After a brief observation of the class, it is clear that the students perceived him as not only a well-informed teacher, but also a role model. He described the experience stating, how “being able to change and see the influence that we are instilling in others has truly been rewarding.”

Major: Information Technology
Graduation: April 2016
High School: Northwest Florida State College Collegiate

I wanted to become a Student Ambassador because I believe in the mission of FITC. I felt the need to do something that would positively impact others and help change the world.

This semester, Martin’s involvement with FITC has been increased as he has taken on the position of Company Outreach Director. In this position, Martin works with another ambassador to recruit companies to partner with the FITC Alliance. Partnered companies are able to participate in career fairs, conduct information sessions, and advertise employment openings to their target audience. Martin is excited about the opportunities available in this position. He described how in this position he plans to “bridge the gap between companies and students by growing the network of job opportunities.” Martin’s job opportunities are numerous. His ideal career involves work that is both exciting and challenging. “My career goals are to look back after ten or twenty years,” he described, “be excited about the work that I’ve put forth and still have the drive to go forward.” To learn more about Martin, connect with him on LinkedIn and follow him on Twitter. FITC Student Ambassadors make up a team of dedicated and knowledgeable students both at FSU and FAMU. These students travel across the Florida Panhandle to promote information technology, computer science, and computer engineering to high schools. Ambassadors are responsible for activities such as running coding camps, assisting in technology clubs, or hosting college tours. For more information on FITC Ambassadors, visit the Ambassador page. The Florida IT Career Alliance is an initiative funded by the Florida Board of Governors which aims to recruit, retain, and employ Florida's next generation technology workforce. FITC promotes information technology, computer science, and computer engineering to local high schools and college students across Florida. Connect with FITC on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.
