Since becoming a Student Ambassador for the Florida IT Career Alliance (FITC) last September, Gentry Redmondhas been an invaluable resource to younger students interested in STEM. The FAMU IT major is passionate about technology and has cherished the opportunity to introduce students to various opportunities in the STEM field.

Redmond explains, "I feel technology education is important because technology is becoming ever more relevant in every industry. Only the individuals who know how to manipulate technology will be useful. FITC is useful because their initiatives get students interested in this great field at an early age."

IMG_9715With FITC, Redmond has participated in STEM Day, taught programs at various schools in the Tallahassee area and worked with academic advising recruitment. He has also mentored young men and women interested in STEM. His most memorable experience with FITC was working with the other ambassadors to spark a particular student's interest in the STEM field by talking to him and teaching him various concepts in coding.

Redmond shares, "I felt that we helped a young man by providing direction to a rewarding career field."

During his time at FAMU, Redmond has been involved with Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity and the Reserve Officer Training Corps. He will be graduating this Spring and plans to serve as an Active Duty Army Officer in the Signal Corps, one of the most technology-driven fields in the Army. His long term career goal is to eventually work for a government-contracting agency, preferably in the cyber security field. To learn more about Redmond, connect with him on LinkedIn.

I feel technology education is important because technology is becoming ever more relevant in every industry. Only the individuals who know how to manipulate technology will be useful. FITC is useful because their initiatives get students interested in this great field at an early age.

FITC Student Ambassadors make up a team of dedicated and knowledgeable students both at FSU and FAMU. These students travel across the Florida Panhandle to promote information technology, computer science, and computer engineering to high schools. Ambassadors are responsible for activities such as running coding camps, assisting in technology clubs, or hosting college tours. For more information on FITC Ambassadors, visit the Ambassador page.

The Florida IT Career Alliance is an initiative funded by the Florida Board of Governors which aims to recruit, retain, and employ Florida's next generation technology workforce. FITC promotes information technology, computer science, and computer engineering to local high schools and college students across Florida. Connect with FITC on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.
