On January 11, students from Pace High School visited Tallahassee for a tour of the Florida State University Campus. Conducted by the Florida IT Career Alliance (FITC), the tour gave students the opportunity to learn about the innovative technological opportunities available at FSU.
Students met up with FITC Ambassadors at the Sportsmanship Statue in the morning before going into UCC. There, they learned about broadcasting as a career field from a presentation by Student Ambassador Brittany Hope.
After the presentation, students were able to have a question and answer session with an FSU CCI Alumna and News Producer at WXTL, Amanda Blomquist. Blomquist discussed how the news studio operates and gave advice to students interested in broadcasting. Emil Davis, a student in the Media Production major at FSU, also advised students interested in broadcasting, stressing the importance of internships and making connections.
The group went on to tour Seminole Productions, the School of Communication's video production unit. Mark Rodin, the Executive Director of Seminole Productions, led the students through the facility. The program provides various media-related services to numerous areas on campus, especially the athletic department.
Students ended the day with an on-campus scavenger hunt and to go on small group tours led by the Ambassadors.
"I asked my students what they learned, and they definitely learned a lot about FSU and its programs," FSU alumna and Pace High School teacher Claudia Cassevah says. "They absolutely loved the student ambassadors and couldn't brag on them enough. They learned about the importance of networking when they heard from the producer."
